Hyman Samuelson papers, 1936-1940.

Papers reflect the life of a young Jewish man while attending Louisiana State University and his military experiences while serving in New Guinea in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 96th Battalion. They relate his academic and social activities in college and difficulties encountered as part of an engineering regiment of African American troops. Samuelson discusses military bureaucracy, troop morale, discipline and engineering projects. Throughout the diaries, he tells of his personal growth and his interpersonal relationships, especially with Dora Reiner. He also refers the fellow officers, native people, tropical diseases, and damage caused by a severe storm in the Pacific, probably Typhoon Helen.

in Hyman Samuelson was born to Jewish parents in Donaldsonville, La., April 11, 1919. He grew up in New Orleans, where his father operated a clothing store. He enrolled as an ROTC cadet at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in 1936 and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in civil engineering in 1940.
